Simon Fraser University’s 2008 Outstanding Alumni Award recipients’ accomplishments and contributions to society epitomize the university’s motto: Thinking of the World.

The university’s Alumni Association will recognize SFU alumni Richard Bruskiewich, Evaleen Jaager Roy, Gabor Maté and Jennifer Allen Simons at the 25th anniversary of the Outstanding Alumni Awards event on Thursday, February 19. Check www.sfu.ca/alumni/events for forthcoming details on the event’s location at the Four Seasons Hotel in Vancouver.

The recipients will receive awards for extraordinary achievements in the following categories:

Academic Achievement
Richard Bruskiewich, BA ’87, senior scientist, bioinformatics, International Rice Research Institute—Manila, Phillippines. A world leader in bioinformatics, Bruskiewich is renowned for being the first person to transfer the genome database, Acedb, to the PC. In his current position he uses bioinformatics to decipher the genetic structure of rice, one of the largest and most important food crops in the world. Bruskiewich lives in Manila and has family in Vancouver.

Professional Achievement
Evaleen Jaager Roy, BBA ’84, vice-president, human resources, global publishing & community, Electronic Arts (EA) in Burnaby. A former chair of SFU’s board of governors, Jaager Roy is a human resources business partner to EA, the world’s largest interactive entertainment company. She also leads EA’s outreach work outside of the United States—an advocacy initiative on behalf of disadvantaged youth. Jaager Roy resides in West Vancouver.

Service to the Community
Gabor Maté, PDP ’69, staff physician, Portland Hotel Society in Vancouver. A physician, researcher, public speaker, columnist, activist/advocate and best-selling author, Vancouver resident Maté is one of Canada’s pre-eminent experts on parenting, attention deficit disorder, mind/body connection and addictions. After operating a 20-year family medical practice, he became the staff physician for the Portland Hotel Society, a residence and resource centre for people suffering from debilitating chronic diseases in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside.

Service to the Community
Jennifer Allen Simons, MA ’83 , PhD ’89, is the founder and president of The Simons Foundation, a private charitable group focused on nuclear disarmament, global cooperation, international law and human security, social justice and education. Simons, a Vancouver resident, has increased awareness and social consciousness by initiating and funding important peace-focused education programs at SFU and beyond. While she is deserving of recognition for the significant funding she has provided to help create a more peaceful and just society, her personal commitment to this vision makes her much more than an important philanthropist.
