Vancouver businessman and SFU chancellor emeritus Milton Wong and his family have donated $3 million to SFU’s new School for the Contemporary Arts (SCA), an anchor tenant in the Woodward’s redevelopment project. Wong also chairs the $30 million capital fundraising campaign for the SCA.
The SCA will move downtown in late 2009, and promises to become one of Vancouver’s most exciting arts and culture venues. The unique facility will include innovative stage, cinema, studio and gallery space to serve students and the wider community.
Wong says the SCA aims to be a good neighbour. “It’s through education and creative expression that people find self-awareness and self respect. These things are incredibly important for elevating the disenfranchised and building resilience in our communities. My hope is that this centre for creative discovery, dialogue and interaction will help to return the Downtown Eastside—the neighborhood I grew up in—to its historical place as the heart of Vancouver.”
Says SFU president and vice-chancellor Michael Stevenson: “Milton and Fei have been strong supporters and good friends to the university for years. This gift will create a lasting legacy that proclaims their ongoing commitment to education and to Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside communities.”
The provincial government recently announced its commitment of close to $50 million toward this School. A $30 million fundraising campaign is underway to ensure the project is completed successfully.
