The World Literature Program at Simon Fraser University is teaming up with the Vancouver International Writers Festival to welcome two internationally acclaimed authors, Kamila Shamsie and Denise Chong, to SFU Surrey on Oct. 20, from 12:30 – 2:30 p.m.
Described by Salman Rushdie as “a writer of immense ambition and strength” and heralded as one of the “21 writers of the 21st century” by Orange Prize Fiction, Shamsie has also received numerous awards for In the City by the Sea (1998), Salt and Saffron (2000), Kartography (2000), Broken Verses (2005).
Chong is the Chinese-Canadian author of the bestselling family memoir The Concubine’s Children. Her second book, The Girl in the Picture, was a finalist for the Governor-General's Literary Non-Fiction Award.
Global Tensions: A Conversation with Kamila Shamsie and Denise Chong will be held in the Westminister Savings Credit Union Lecture Theatre at SFU Surrey. Both writers will also participate in separate festival events at Granville Island.
Shamsie and Chong will read from their latest works, Burnt Shadows and Egg on Mao, and tackle the issue of complex global relationships among cultures and politics. World Literature Director Ken Seigneurie will moderate a question period.
“‘Global Tensions’ promises to be a high point of the fall cultural season in the greater Vancouver area,” notes Seigneurie. “Kamila Shamsie and Denise Chong are on the fast track to being world renown, and we’re delighted to welcome them to SFU Surrey to hear them discuss their views on literature and contemporary socio-political tensions.”
All are welcome to attend this free event; however, seating is limited and registration is required. For more information, visit: http://www.fass.surrey.sfu.ca/wl/
