Friends of Simon, Simon Fraser University’s tutoring project for Lower Mainland immigrant and refugee students, received a Scotiabank & United Way Celebration of Community Award on March 9.

The award recognizes community supports that respond in innovative ways to changing social conditions.

Initiated by SFU’s Faculty of Education six years ago, Friends of Simon trains more than 50 SFU undergraduates each year as tutors. They provide literacy support to more than 230 children through after-school, Saturday and summer programs at 13 schools and community agencies in Burnaby, Coquitlam and Surrey.

“The program gives SFU students an opportunity to contribute to community and helps these young children, many of them from immigrant families, to improve their literacy skills through a range of activities like writing, drama, poetry, songs and creative movement,” says project coordinator Angela Flumerfelt.
