Cardiovascular disease — a growing problem in both Canada and India — will be the focus of an international conference at Simon Fraser University’s Surrey campus June 21-23.
The conference, Cardiovascular Health, is co-sponsored by SFU and the Fraser Health Authority, and will draw researchers from Canada and India to discuss the current state of knowledge and research in cardiovascular health, including future perspectives, new research, treatment and prevention.
“We expect as many as 250 of the key decision makers in this field to attend the conference,” says co-chair Arun Garg, who also chairs SFU’s India Advisory Council.
Garg, the medical director for pathology and lab medicine with Fraser Health, calls cardiovascular disease — including diabetes and stroke — an epidemic in both countries.
He says the conference will serve as a launch pad for better health and economic development in both countries for the next decade and beyond.
The conference will see non-medical participants such as public policy advisors, entrepreneurs and industry professionals joining in dialogue with academics, researchers, clinicians, public health officials and health innovation professionals.
Arun Chockalingam, professor of global health in SFU’s Faculty of Health Sciences, co-chairs the Canada-India Networking Initiative with Garg. He says the conference will strengthen research collaboration between India and Canada.
“More importantly, it will reduce the burden of cardiovascular diseases in both countries through innovative health systems, effective health promotion and social equities,” he says.
“We also hope to establish a system to develop sustainable networking between the two countries in different aspects of cardiovascular disease prevention.”

Hello, I am a documentary film and corporate film creator. I am very interested in meeting up with someone to possible film and produce an informative DVD.
I also have a personal vested interest in collaborating with SFU/Fraser health Authority. I recently had a heart attack at age 37 and I too am from India. I would love the opportunity to meet with someone.
Sincerly
