Simon Fraser University will welcome two new deans this summer: Claire Cupples takes the helm of the Faculty of Science for a five-year term effective August 1, 2010, while John Craig captains the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences as dean pro-tem for one year beginning July 1, 2010.
Cupples comes to SFU after seven years at the University of Victoria, first as chair of biochemistry and microbiology, then associate dean, and for the last year as acting dean of science. Prior to UVic, she chaired the biology department at Montreal’s Concordia University for six years.
SFU vice-president academic Jon Driver says Cupples “brings considerable strengths in strategic planning and organizational leadership and a real passion for science across the disciplines and for sharing knowledge through community outreach.”
Craig is a former chair of SFU’s history department where he has been a faculty member since 1994.
Driver says Craig “is a well-respected scholar who understands both the humanities and social sciences."
“He has the combination of administrative experience and knowledge of the faculty that will enable him to provide strong leadership during the upcoming transitional year.”
