With 500 plus people already registered to attend a lecture at Simon Fraser University by one of the most recognized voices on understanding Muslims, the lecture’s co-hosts are staging a preceding news conference.

Tariq Ramadan, a widely published Islamic philosopher and Swiss philosopher, will make himself available to media for 20 minutes prior to delivering The Quest for Meaning and Pluralism at SFU’s downtown Segal School of Business on Thursday, Feb. 3 at 7 p.m.

Ramadan will be available to talk to media from 6:20-6:40 p.m. in Video Conference room 2400 at the Segal Graduate School of Business, 500 Granville Street. Because space is limited, media who call/email to book a spot will be allowed entrance on a first come first serve basis. They must provide credentials.

Ramadan’s lecture will launch a free public spring lecture series co-hosted by SFU’s Centre for the Comparative Study of Muslim Societies and Cultures (CCSMSC) and a variety of sponsors.

SFU’s School for International Studies (SIS) is the companion sponsor of this opening lecture, which will include book signings by Ramadan, whose latest book inspired his lecture.

Ramadan has authored more than 20 books and lectures extensively on his exploration of the relationship between contemporary Islam and the West through the lens of religious, secular and indigenous spiritual traditions.

Due to the overwhelming interest in Ramadan’s Feb. 3 lecture, CCSMSC and SIS are enabling media to get his views on the rapidly evolving collapse of Egypt’s political system, following uprisings in North Africa.

Anyone worldwide can watch the lecture live online by clicking on http://www.lidc.sfu.ca/broadcast/ and selecting the first lecture presentation.

Questions related to the lecture can also be sent by email while it is being live webcast at CCSMSC@sfu.ca.
