Local politicians will join Simon Fraser University officials for a tour of the university’s chemistry renovation project on Friday, June 25 at 10:15 a.m.
MLAs Douglas Horne (Coquitlam-Burke Mountain) and Richard Lee (Burnaby North) and MP Dona Cadman (Surrey North) will get a first-hand look at the progress of the $49.4 million renovation, funded by the provincial government and Industry Canada’s Knowledge Infrastructure Program (KIP).
Work on the 102,000-sq.ft. facility includes replacing the exterior envelope, adding seismic bracing, removing hazardous waste, installing new HVAC systems and bringing it up to Gold LEED green building certification.
Ninety-per-cent of the original materials that were removed from the existing structure have been recycled.
The aging wing, housed in the Shrum Sciences Centre, represents a part of the overall vision of university architect Arthur Erickson, and the renovation is designed to complement that vision.
The project is on schedule and expected to be complete by March 2011.
Media interviews can be conducted following the tour. Media should meet at the south-east corner of the Maggie Benston Building on the 2000 level.
