Forgather at Simon Fraser University to mark the 250th anniversary of the birth of the famous Scottish bard, Robbie Burns on Friday, Jan. 23.

In honour of the occasion (Burns’ birthday is on Sunday, Jan. 25), SFU will host festivities at all three campuses featuring an SFU piper, recitations of Burns poetry and of course, haggis. The piper-led, plaid-mad party will toast the haggis and those in attendance can sample a wee bit of the Scottish delicacy.

The fun begins at the Surrey campus (250-13450-102 Ave.) at 11 a.m. and will include a fiddlers performance, then travels to the Burnaby campus at 12:30 p.m. for more traditional celebrations.

The final ceremony at 3 p.m. includes Scottish country dancers at the Vancouver (Harbour Centre) campus at 515 W. Hastings Street.

The procession will be led by a member of the Robert Malcolm Memorial Jr. Pipe Band and accompanied by members of the university and community, including Surrey’s city Councillor Barbara Steele, Mayor Derek Corrigan in Burnaby, and Vancouver’s new mayor Gregor Robertson.

At 12:30, the Burnaby campus will host the first ever “Dressed to Kilt” fashion show at the Highland Pub with campus members strutting their Scottish attire and showing their spirit.

The celebration continues at 6 p.m. at the SFU Robbie Burns dinner and silent auction at the Executive Plaza Hotel in Coquitlam, featuring performances by the current and five-time world champion SFU Pipe Band and the Robert Malcolm Memorial Pipe Band.
