Canada should pursue economic policies that encourage collective spending and instill a broad economic stimulus - policies that would help Canada come out of the recession further ahead than when it began, says Marjorie Griffin Cohen, an SFU political economist.

Cohen will share her latest research on the economic effects of policy changes when she addresses government policy-makers and parliamentarians in Ottawa on Feb. 10, at the Canadian Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences’ (CFHSS) Breakfast on the Hill.

Cohen will provide economic justifications for focusing government spending on housing, making infrastructure projects more people-oriented, expanding the benefits of the Canada Pension Plan and making Employment Insurance more accessible.

Cohen is the principal investigator with the Economic Security Project, a joint research project between SFU and the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives. She has spent the past five years with a team of researchers studying policy changes and their effects on the economic security of vulnerable populations.

Cohen will be available for media interviews Feb. 9 and 10, following her presentation.
