A virtual meditation walk, a DNA-discovering taste test, a wireless shopping cart application, iRobots, maggot painting and more will be on display at Simon Fraser University’s annual Surrey campus open house on Thursday, March 4 from 4:30 – 8:30 p.m.

High school students, their parents and the public are all invited, says Surrey enrolment manager Matthew Grant.

“You can tour the campus, watch the entertainment on the mezzanine floor, hear presentations on academic programs, view student projects and faculty demonstrations, see interactive displays, ask questions of our many university participants, and win prizes,” Grant says.

Faculty and students from many SFU programs will be on hand to answer questions and show off their work. Activities and demonstrations include:

  • Arts and Social Sciences: Learn about the world with an interactive map activity, "spin the wheel" to find out about programs and win prizes. And get your hands dirty by painting with live maggots.
  • Business: Drink "mocktails" to win prizes, hear real student experiences, and find out what happens to an SFU Business student after university through the current and alumni student panel.
  • Computing Science: See iPhone applications created by students, check out the iRobots, play games and win prizes.
  • Engineering Science: Participate in a showcase of lego mindstorm, robotics and control applications, a shaker suspension system, an automatic fall detection system and more!
  • Interactive Arts and Technology: Experience a virtual meditation walk, a scarf that connects fellow fans at sporting events, a wireless shopping cart application, and an interactive environmental game for kids.
  • TechOne: Learn to build Digital Lego Models on the computer, and Photoshop yourself into a TechOne t-shirt, or photo and print it for a keepsake!
  • Science: Let your hair stand up, tease your brain, find out your DNA using a taste test, and see if you produce enough energy to light a light-bulb.
  • Education: Learn about Education and the Professional Development Program, and get stories of first hand experiences from students.
  • Continuing Studies: Discover new programs for working professionals such as the diploma in Leading for Workplace Health and the Aboriginal Pre-Health Program.

Potential students and their parents can also find out information about SFU Surrey’s innovative first-year programs, TechOne, Explorations, and Science Year One.

“We’re also giving out great prizes,” says Grant, “including a Nintendo Wii, tuition awards, and every high school or transfer student who attends will get a free t-shirt.”

The Open House will be held at the Surrey campus at Central City, 13450 102 Ave., close to the Surrey Central Skytrain station. For more information visit www.surrey.sfu.ca/openhouse or call 778.782.7400.
