A Simon Fraser University student whose accomplishments are catching the attention of international scientists is the third SFU student in the last seven years to be named one of Canada’s top co-op students.
The Canadian Association for Co-operative Education (CAFCE) has kicked off National Co-operative Education Week (March 23-27) by naming Katelyn Mueller one of two 2008 National Co-op Students of the Year.
Mueller, an SFU molecular biology and biochemistry undergraduate student, holds a 4.16 cumulative grade point average. The recipient of the Governor General’s bronze academic medal and the B.C. Science Achievement Award, Mueller’s work has been published nationally and internationally.
By the end of her co-op program, Mueller’s employers were as impressed with her as she was with them. “I can only praise her personality and immaculate work and I foresee a great future for her in science,” says Kristian Müller, who oversaw Mueller’s work on cancer treatment development at the Biology III Institute at Germany’s University of Freiburg.
“I knew that gaining hands-on experience outside the classroom would be one of the best ways to learn and enable me to explore and shape my career goals,” says Mueller.
With David Granville, an SFU graduate and cardiovascular researcher at St. Paul’s Hospital, Mueller studied ways of reducing heart transplant rejection. At Merck Frosst, an internationally recognized drug manufacturer, she helped advance research on heart disease.
Muriel Klemetski, director of SFU’s co-op education program, calls Mueller “an ambassador for co-op education around the world.”
The CAFCE National Co-op Student of the Year award recognizes students enrolled in an accredited co-op program who excel in job and academic performance and responsibility.
The award comes with a certificate, a plaque and $1,000.
