What’s the best way to deal with youth violence? Can money buy happiness? Is it normal for teens to be moody and antisocial? What can animals teach us about human language? These are just some of the questions to be addressed in the third annual Psych in the City lecture series at Simon Fraser University’s Surrey campus starting on Wednesday, April 8.

Psych in the City host Jack Martin says the topics show the importance of psychology in our everyday world. “When people think of the field of psychology images may come to mind of clients lying on leather couches. But these stereotypical images are both misleading and erroneously narrow,” he says.

“Psychologists study issues such as child development, social relationships and group dynamics, prejudice, violence and more. Psychology is a big field and this is an opportunity for the public to learn more about it.”

The lectures take place on Wednesdays in April from 7-9 p.m. Each evening will spotlight one area of psychology and will consist of two talks followed by a question-and-answer period, including:

April 8 - Law & Forensic Psychology
April 15 - Clinical Psychology
April 22 - Developmental Psychology
April 29 - Social Psychology

Psych in the City is free, but pre-registration is advised. For more information visit the website at http://www.psychinthecity.ca/ or call 778.782.3250.
