SFU Harbour Centre turns 20

It’s a little hard to believe for those who’ve been here from the beginning, but SFU’s Vancouver campus is celebrating its 20th anniversary.
Until SFU opened at Harbour Centre on May 5, 1989, Vancouver was the only North American city of its size without a permanent downtown university campus.
The location has influenced a lot. Courses, programs and research have benefited from interaction with the community.
Some examples - the undergraduate program in dialogue focuses on urban issues while graduate degrees in business, urban studies and public policy help shape the city and province.
The community also benefits from access to the university – free public lectures offered by SFU between 1996-2008 have attracted more than 50,000 participants.
Now spread over three – and soon to be four - buildings (including Woodward’s) the campus is celebrating with a founders luncheon on Tuesday, May 5, 12 noon – 2 pm at Harbour Centre.
President Michael Stevenson and Jack Blaney, a former SFU president and the one most responsible for the university’s downtown initiative, will speak.
Campus tours follow and from 4-6 pm there will be an all-welcome reception. Both events take place at Harbour Centre, 515 West Hastings.
