Simon Fraser University has joined the Vancouver 2010 community contributor program, designed to engage community groups and participation in welcoming the world to the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.

The university will provide parking spaces February 12-28 at its Burnaby campus to serve as a park-n-ride location 2010 Olympic Community Contributorfor ticketed spectators (Parking lots B & G). SFU will take a two-week break in classes during the Olympics. The university will remain open but expects many individuals will choose to take vacations during the Games. As well, the break will give students, faculty and staff the opportunity to volunteer at the Games. Dates for the spring and summer terms at SFU in 2010 were adjusted to accommodate the extended break.

In addition, the university will work with VANOC to provide training and meeting facilities.

“SFU is proud to be a part of the community contributor program, providing vital services and resources that will help ensure the success of the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games,” says Michael Stevenson, President and Vice Chancellor. “We live, work and study in one of the world’s most stunning urban landscapes and we look forward to opening our doors to the world during this exceptional event.”

In exchange, SFU receives a wide range of domestic rights and benefits that create a close association with the Games. Further details will be unveiled in the next few months.

Hi Nicole and other SFU students who are interested to volunteer for the Winter Olympics,

SFU Business club MISA is hosting an volunteer info session on Tuesday June 23, 2009 3:30 - 4:30PM in ASSC 10041.

MISA is putting on an info session for students that are technically minded to come and listen to a presentation by the VANOC volunteer committee regarding the various positions. This will also be a great time to get any questions about volunteering answered by a VANOC representative. Finally as an added incentive, you will also learn how to "fast track" the recruitment process. The positions DO NOT require setting up main frames or coding, so please do not be intimidated and come down for the info session before letting this amazing opportunity slip by.

This info session, and volunteer positions, are open to all students from all faculties. So tell your friends about it and come down to find out more information about the chance of a life time; to volunteer for the Vancouver Winter Olympics!

Please register at www.sfubusiness.ca/misa

Thanks and regards,

Awin

I used to be the volunteer of Beijing Summer Olympic. It's amazing to be a person who can help others and serve your country. I will remember those days forever, really. If I'm lucky encough, I will do it better.

caitlin

so does this mean that if i were to go on holidays during the time off that i would be missing classes, if the university is still going to be open?

moe kopahi

hmmm... well, @ least we get some time to study... im glad :D

Exactly what adjustments have been made to the other terms? - is it possible to get specific dates of when the winter term will start and end officially, which weeks will have classes cancelled?

What are the spill-over ramifications for the spring and summer? Will those terms be compressed, how will that impact co-op terms, the school term, any impact on fees?

Can you publish specific dates with what the deviations are from the normal terms?

Just in general, specific dates would be most helpful in planning for accommodations, jobs, etc.

There are additional costs that students will incur as a result of this decision - longer rents to pay, leases that are up and can't be extended. Knowing details is crucial.

Ruth,

All the dates and changes have been posted to http://www.sfu.ca/pamr/olympic_break.html You can also find all the dates on the Academic Calender at https://events.sfu.ca/View.html?=&calendar_id=4 (or at http://events.sfu.ca and then select the Academic calender from the drop down menu. Hope that answers your questions.
