Simon Fraser University’s Mechatronics engineering program is co-hosting a second Hands-on Diesel 101 class this summer for girls entering grades 10-12 who are interested in engineering or trades careers and want to learn more about engines.

The first class filled quickly following initial publicity about the course.

The five-day camp, to be run in collaboration with Cummins Western Canada (CWC), BCIT, VCC and Junior Achievement, will include three days of experience tearing down a Cummins engine, reassembling it and seeing it run.

The other two days will include discussions with CWC employees on working with engines and the challenges of balancing work and home life. SFU, BCIT and VCC will present information on post-secondary education required for engineering and entering the trades. Junior Achievement will present a class on the Economics for Success.

The second class is limited to 12 girls and applications are due by June 15. The cost is $50 for the week and includes safety glasses, lunch and a t-shirt. The program runs Aug. 31 – Sept. 4 at CWC’s Surrey branch and at VCC. To apply online or get more information, visit http://westerncanada.cummins.com/ or email Ching.L.Gettman@Cummins.com.
