An engaged citizenry is essential for democracy – and Simon Fraser University's new certificate program in dialogue and civic engagement is designed to help make that connection.

"Citizens who are connected with each other and their local governments have an increased sense of belonging, trust, well-being and resilience," says Joanna Ashworth, director of SFU continuing studies dialogue programs. "This program is for those already involved in community or civic engagement activities, and for those who want the skills to become effective participants and leaders."

Participants from non-governmental organizations, business, community and health organizations, First Nations, unions and all levels of government are expected to be in the first cohort. The program - core courses, skills workshops and a practicum - encourages critical and creative approaches to civic engagement. All instructors and presenters are recognized as highly skilled engagement practitioners. The inaugural series of courses and workshops begins in September 2009 and ends in April 2010.
