The Simon Fraser University Pipe Band, five times world champion, offers a free concert on Sunday, August 2, on the Burnaby campus of SFU.
The concert begins at 2 p.m. Sunday on the Academic Quadrangle Lawn on the Burnaby Mountain campus.
For the band, it’s a warm-up for a concert in the Royal Glasgow Concert Hall on Aug. 12—and then the world championship on Glasgow Green on Aug. 15. In that, SFU seeks its sixth world crown. There will be 200 bands from 16 nations competing.
For concert-goers, Sunday’s concert offers a chance to meet the pipers and drummers and ask about their music and skills: Is it true that a bagpipe player is limited to just nine notes? Does it really take "seven years to make a piper"? Why do they say Highland drums provide “harmony” and not a “beat”? What will the judges be looking and listening for at the world championships in Glasgow?
Fans can park free on Lot B or Lot C on the Burnaby campus.
