Seven bagpipe players from the world-champion Simon Fraser University Pipe Band will be in another world-class competition this week at the famed Northern Meeting event in Inverness, Scotland.
The Northern Meeting is billed as a premier piping competition in the world. Only 100 pipers are invited, and the event has been held annually for 210 years. Version 211 runs Thursday, Sept. 3 and Friday, Sept. 4.
Invited from the SFU band are Pipe Sergeant Jack Lee of Surrey B.C. and his two sons Colin and Andrew; Alastair Lee of Coquitlam (son of Jack's brother, Pipe Major Terry Lee); Xavier Boderiou from Brittany, France; Will Nichols of Blaine WA, and Jori Chisholm of Seattle.
The SFU band won its sixth world championship—and its second straight—in Glasgow on Aug. 12. Some pipers stayed on for other Highland competitions: Alastair Lee was first in Grade B march event and second in the Silver Medal standings at the Argyllshire Gathering in Oban. Jori Chisholm placed first in the Grade A Strathspey and Reel contest at the Cowal Highland Gathering.
Also at the Oban event were Jack Lee (third in the senior piobaireachd and fourth in the Grade A march); Nichols (second in the Grade B march), and Boderiou (fourth in the B march).
And at the Cowal gathering: Chisholm was also first in the "Best Dressed Playing Piper" and 6th in the Grade A march. Alastair Lee was also fourth in Grade B Strathspey and Reel.
Another SFU piper, Andrew Hayes, was second to Chisholm in the Grade A Strathspey and Reel, placed third in the Grade A march, and fifth in the challenging piobaireachd event.
