A second SFU scholar been selected to receive a prestigious Canada-U.S. Fulbright award this year.

James Dean, an economics professor emeritus, has been named the Fulbright Visiting Chair in North American Studies at American University in Washington, D.C.

He joins Ian McCarthy, an SFU Business associate professor, who last February was named a Fulbright New Century Scholar at the Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech) in Atlanta, Ga.

Dean will work on a book that will analyze what Canada and the U.S. can learn from each other about welfare enhancement through regulatory and policy reform. The book will focus on the mutually beneficial nature of the Canada-U.S. economic relationship.

McCarthy, a Canada Research Chair in technology and operations management, will be collaborating with 30 other prominent scholars from around the world on a topic of shared global importance.

SFU will also host U.S. Fulbright student Beza Ayalew, a master’s student from Denison University, Ohio, who will study public health in the Faculty of Health Sciences until next May. Her research project is entitled “An exploration of Canada’s health care systems service for immigrant populations.”

The Fulbright program operates in more than 150 countries worldwide and has long been regarded as the world’s foremost academic exchange.
