Peter Ladner, a two-term member of Vancouver City Council and candidate in last November’s mayoralty race, has been appointed a Fellow in Simon Fraser University’s Centre for Dialogue.
Under the project title, Planning Cities as if Food Matters, Ladner will be teaching in the spring 2010 Undergraduate Semester in Dialogue, on Finding Space, Understanding Place: Redesigning our Region for Resilience.
Ladner will also research and write a book of the same title and participate in related workshops and dialogues. He recently moderated a Centre for Dialogue-sponsored program looking at Metro Vancouver's food security plans - or lack of them.
“Peter has been involved in several SFU dialogue programs,” says Mark Winston, academic director of the Centre for Dialogue. “His work is well-allied with continuing studies’ City Program as well, headed by another former city councillor, Gordon Price.
“We hope to use Peter’s tenure as a Fellow to plan more joint activities within the university and with outside groups interested in what happens at the junction of food sustainability and urban planning. We're enthusiastic about the project, and Peter as a colleague.”
Ladner, a UBC graduate, is currently a business columnist and sustainability consultant. A journalist for 35 years, he was co-founder of the award-winning Business in Vancouver weekly newspaper in 1989. His SFU appointment is from Sept. 2009-Aug. 31, 2010 and is renewable for a second year.
