Simon Fraser University has moved up a notch – from 20th to 19th spot - in Re$earch Infosource’s ranking of the top 50 research universities in Canada.

SFU tallied $86.7 million in research funding in 2008, up from $77.6 million in 2007. “These ranking measures indicate that our investments in research personnel, research infrastructure, and graduate student support are paying off,” says Mario Pinto, SFU’s vice-president, research.

The university is also in the spotlight for its research output, which Pinto says is “due to the recruitment of bright stars into our talent pool who are producing peer-reviewed scholarly work of high impact.”

SFU was second in growth of the number of publications between fiscal 2002-2007 with an impressive increase of 61.9 per cent (the University of New Brunswick was first at 68.9 per cent).

In “publication impact,” SFU remains No.1 among comprehensive universities and placed seventh overall. Publication impact is a measure of the perceived impact of research through a calculation of citations received by journals.

“We are clearly now a mature research operation, and we must continue to meet the significant challenges ahead with our unique and successful combination of agility, boldness and distinctiveness,” says Pinto.

All four B.C. universities made the national top 50 research-income list and attracted a combined total of $685.9 million last year, up 17.8 per cent from $581.9 million in 2007.
