Milun Tesovic, a 23-year-old Simon Fraser University business student, has been named the top student entrepreneur in the world, beating out 31 other students from 18 countries in the annual Global Student Entrepreneur Awards (GSEA) held in Kansas City, MO on Nov. 19. Tesovic also received the GSEA Innovation Award for his creativity and unique approach to business.
Tesovic is founder and chief executive of Metroleap Media, which operates metrolyrics.com, one of the most popular music websites in the world. He started the business when he was 16 years old so he could afford to buy a car. Today metrolyrics.com receives more than 35 million unique monthly visitors.
In spite of its global reach, MetroLeap remains firmly Burnaby, B.C.-based and 80 per cent of its staff are current SFU students or alumni.
Tesovic was aided by SFU’s Venture Labs Early Stage Business Incubator, which offers an opportunity to develop companies with the assistance of hand-picked experts and mentors. It’s one of the programs offered by Venture Connection, SFU’s new interdisciplinary hub for entrepreneurial activity.
“We’re thrilled Milun has won this competition,” says Jim Derbyshire, Venture Connection's Student Mentorship Program Director. “He’s an outstanding example of an entrepreneur who balances academic and business success with family and community life. His success is helping build momentum at SFU and will encourage the next wave of student entrepreneurs."
The GSEA honour is just the latest in a series of accolades for Tesovic. He has also been named Canadian Student Entrepreneur National Champion, SFU Student Entrepreneur of the Year, and was recently listed as one of Billboard Magazine’s “Top 30 Under 30”. MetroLeap has also received a Red Herring Top 50 award this year as one of Canada’s most innovative and promising companies.
