Simon Fraser University’s School of Criminology, the Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General are hosting a forum on Investigating Complaints Against Police: Models, Options and Issues on Monday, Nov. 30 from 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
The forum will facilitate discussion about the different approaches to responding to and investigating complaints against police.
The program includes:
An introduction by Robert Gordon, director of SFU’s School of Criminology;
Opening remarks by the Hon. Kash Heed, Minister of Public Safety and Solicitor General;
An address by SFU criminology associate professor David MacAlister on Investigating Complaints against Police: Framing the Issues.
At 9:30 a.m., a keynote panel moderated by Gordon will include:
- Ian Scott, director, Special Investigations Unit, Government of Ontario
- Paul Kennedy, chair, Commission for Public Complaints Against the RCMP
- Stan Lowe, Police Complaint Commissioner, Office of the Police Complaints Commissioner, B.C.
At 2 p.m. a panel response and general discussion will be moderated by Bob Stewart, former Chief Constable of the Vancouver Police dept, including:
- Peter German, of the E Division, RCMP
- Rob Holmes, president of the BC Civil Liberties Association
- Chief Constable Bob Rich, of the Abbotsford Police Department, and president of the B.C. Association of Municipal Chiefs of Police
- Tom Stamatakis, President, B.C. Police Association
Rick Parent, assistant criminology professor at SFU, will provide concluding remarks.
