Simon Fraser University’s Surrey campus will be alive with robots and LEGO blocks on Saturday, Nov. 29 from 9:30 a.m. – 4 p.m., as the campus hosts the annual FIRST LEGO League Climate Connections Challenge.

FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) was founded to inspire young people’s interest and participation in science and technology.

This year’s event calls for teams of nine- to 14 year-olds to research and present their own creative solutions – using LEGO robots – to one of today’s most critical environmental issues: our changing climate.

With missions including exploring greenhouse gases, effects on wildlife and preparations for climatic conditions, the teams will have to program their robots to explore questions related to climate. A dozen teams are expected to compete.

Using LEGO technologies and play materials, children will work alongside adult mentors to design, build and program robots to complete missions based on real-world challenges.

The competition is judged on project presentation, robot performance, technical design and robot programming, and teamwork.

Now in its 10th year, the FIRST LEGO League anticipates its biggest season ever, with more than 13,500 teams in 40 countries competing in hundreds of qualifying events and championship tournaments.

Teams will also have the opportunity to participate at the FIRST LEGO League World Festival, to be held in conjunction with the FIRST Championship, April 16-18, 2009 at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta, Georgia.

FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) was founded to inspire young people’s interest and participation in science and technology.

Everyone is welcome to come and watch the competition. The SFU Surrey campus is located at 13450 102 Avenue, next to the Surrey Central SkyTrain station.
