A new travel award program at Simon Fraser University is making it easier for students to undertake international humanitarian work in countries served by airlines that participate in the Asia Miles program.

SFU is partnering with the Vancouver-based C.A.R.E. Society to offer the C.A.R.E. SFU Global Travel Award Program. The program helps students pay for air travel associated with participating in international volunteer or co-operative (coop) education work with a non-profit organization involved in humanitarian assistance, civic engagement or international service learning.

Students seeking this kind of volunteer work this fall or next spring (2011) should apply for the travel award this summer, advises Adam Brayford, communications and marketing coordinator of SFU’s Work Integrated Learning Unit. He explains students need to allow time for the award application review process and to make travel arrangements.

“The goal of this global citizen education program is to provide meaning and life-changing benefits to both student participants and people in need,” says Marion Man, C.A.R.E. Society president.

C.A.R.E. distributes and donates Asia Miles points to facilitate air travel for humanitarian aid in developing countries and disaster stricken areas served by airlines partnered with Asia Miles. The travel rewards program enables air travelers flying on Cathay Pacific, Dragonair or a partner airline to accumulate mileage credits.
