Simon Fraser University President Andrew Petter will be formally installed as the university’s ninth president and vice-chancellor during the morning ceremony of Fall Convocation on Thursday, Oct. 7 beginning at 9:45 a.m.

Petter, who officially began his term Sept. 1, will take the oath of office before Chief Justice Lance Finch at the start of the ceremony, following the traditional procession of graduands into Convocation Mall.

After being invested with the robes of office by SFU Chancellor Brandt Louie, Petter will give a brief speech and the ceremony will continue with the granting of degrees to Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences graduands.

During the afternoon ceremony on Thursday, beginning at 2:30 p.m., an honorary degree will be conferred on Pat Carney, former federal senator, MP and minister responsible for the Canada-U.S. free trade negotiations in the Mulroney government. Carney has been a strong voice for B.C. and is a role model for female politicians and an advocate for aboriginal women’s rights.

Degrees will then be granted in the faculties of Applied Sciences, Communication, Art and Technology (FCAT) and Health Sciences.

Fall Convocation continues on Friday, Oct. 8, with the granting of degrees in the faculties of Business Administration and Environment during the morning ceremony, and Education and Science in the afternoon.

Nearly 3,000 students are eligible to participate in Fall Convocation ceremonies.
