A third place finish at the World Pipe Band Championships has dashed hopes that the Simon Fraser University Pipe Band could win the title three times in a row.

But Pipe Sergeant Jack Lee says the band performed its best and is pleased to remain one of the world’s tops bands.

The band did have reason to celebrate as SFU Drum Major Jason Paguio took the top prize in the World Drum Major championship.

She could easily lay claim to being the Simon Fraser University Pipe Band’s biggest fan. With her two sons leading the band and five grandchildren playing in it, Annabelle Lee has a little more at stake at Saturday’s World Pipe Band Championships than most moms attending the competition.

Lee, the mother of Pipe Sergeant Jack Lee and Pipe Major Terry Lee, will be at Glasgow Green – her first trip back since 1985 - to watch her family compete for their third straight championship title.

“If we do what we do well, then we’ve accomplished our goal,” Pipe Major Terry Lee told band members on the eve of the competition. “We’re the best we’ve ever been right now.

The SFU Pipe Band wowed the crowds at an afternoon concert in Glasgow’s George Square on Aug. 11, from die-hard piping fans to passersby as well as the Scottish media, who called their performance “slick” and their precision and detail “impeccable.”

“It felt like the crowd was very much with us,” says Pipe Sergeant Jack Lee, confident his band is ready for the Worlds.

Port Coquitlam retiree and piper Bill Dow, 75, will be in the crowd at Glasgow Green in Scotland on Aug. 14 – he’ll be cheering for the Simon Fraser University Pipe Band, vying for its third straight win at the World Bagpipe Championships.

Dow, pipe major of the Mission City Band, has followed the SFU band to Glasgow seven times and this year “likes their chances.”

A sold-out concert in Belfast with longtime rivals Field Marshal Montgomery Pipe Band was the first order of business for the SFU Pipe Band – they dazzled the crowd and showed off new kilts – before heading to Stirling, Scotland, where practices for Saturday’s (Aug. 14) World Bagpipe Championships will begin in earnest.
