For the first time, Simon Fraser University’s annual Diwali celebration will be held at the university’s Surrey campus on Tues., Nov. 2, 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the Dale B Regehr Grand Hall.

The event is SFU’s third annual Diwali celebration, a South Asian cultural and business-networking event that features a glowing display of lights, traditional cuisine and dancing.

“SFU’s Diwali event is one of the many ways in which the university celebrates Indian culture and connects with the South Asian community," says SFU President Andrew Petter.

"I’m gratified by the support given to the university by the community, including helping to create opportunities for our students to work, study and volunteer in the cities and villages of India."

Funds raised from the event will go toward SFU student scholarships to support these initiatives.

“Diwali is a perfect opportunity to celebrate our diversity and recognize it as a key to enriching the communities in which we live and work,” says Mauro Manzi, district vice president, Fraser Valley Commercial Banking Group at TD Commercial Banking, title event sponsor.

“Happy communities create healthy businesses and these improve the quality of life for all. I’m proud to work for an organization that respects, values and supports our cultural differences and fosters a spirit of inclusiveness that helps us succeed together.”

Featured this year will be bhangra performances led by instructors of SFU’s first ever bhangra dance credit course (Popular Dance: Introduction to Modern and Traditional Bhangra) offered at SFU’s Goldcorp School for the Contemporary Arts.

More than 300 Indo-Canadian and South Fraser business and community members, as well as SFU alumni, faculty, staff and students are expected to attend the annual event.
