SFU’s researchers are bringing in about four times the research income they did a decade ago—and are having more impact than ever before— according to Canada’s Top 50 Research Universities List 2010, released Oct. 19 by Research Infosource Inc.

SFU topped Canada’s comprehensive universities and all but two of the nation’s medical/doctoral universities for its publication impact—a measure of the probability of being cited in scholarly journals.

Over the past decade, the university also achieved the highest research publication growth among comprehensive universities, more than doubling its scholarly output.

SFU also witnessed a staggering 272-per-cent increase in its research income over the past decade, compared to the 163-per-cent average growth rate. With almost $84 million in funding in 2009, SFU maintained its position among the top-20 Canadian research universities.

“It’s great to be recognized for eclipsing the national average in research income growth over the past decade,” says VP-research Mario Pinto.

“But what is even more telling from these results is that SFU sets the benchmark for research impact and output among the comprehensive universities.

“It confirms that our faculty and students are producing excellent returns on the investments we receive, in the form of peer-reviewed scholarly publications of high impact."
