Tech-savvy students were at their entrepreneurial best at Simon Fraser University’s inaugural Concept Connection competition held at the Surrey campus.
The winning concept is a mobile application called Quikpiq, which allows users to ask their current social networks for feedback on potential purchases and other decisions.
Runner up QuakeAware is an app that enables users to prepare themselves in the wake of an earthquake.
And in the "audience favourite" category, Live Interactive Shopping System, or LISS, an iPhone app for scanning groceries, emerged as the winner.
The student presentations were made April 29 before a panel of industry judges. The winner and runner-up teams share $1,000 in prizes.
The contest is designed to encourage students from any field to create and pitch their entrepreneurial ideas.
Quikpiq team members include Anoop Aulakh (Communication), Ashish Gurung (Business) and Don Masakayn (SIAT).
QuakeAware’s team of MBA/Management of Technology students - Kelvin Chiu, Ryan Cole, Donal De Paor, Dylan Marks, Terrence Tam, Eliza Yiu.
LISS was created by a SIAT capstone team including Moein Sabouhiyan, Peter Zhao, Lisa Guo, Andrew Chen, Xenia Hsu.
The other finalists were G-Frame, a location based role-playing game for smart phones, and Wine-Peer, a peer to peer wine-rating system via the web and mobile devices.
