Simon Fraser University will honour journalist and politician Carole Taylor and her husband, former Vancouver mayor and businessman, Art Phillips, with its 2010 President's Distinguished Community Leadership Award.
The couple will receive the award, which recognizes individuals or organizations for outstanding community service, during a gala ceremony Apr. 21 at the Four Seasons Hotel in Vancouver.
Taylor and Phillips have dedicated many years to serving the community through their political leadership after having achieved great personal success in the private sector.
Taylor was a television journalist for more than 20 years, hosting such shows as CTV’s Canada AM and W5 and the CBC’s Pacific Report and Vancouver Life.
She also served as a Vancouver city councillor from 1986-1990, after which she variously chaired the Vancouver Port Authority, the Canada Ports Corporation, the Vancouver Board of Trade and the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation.
In 2005, Taylor was elected as the Liberal MLA for Vancouver-Langara and subsequently appointed Minister of Finance, a position she held until leaving office in 2008.
Taylor has volunteered with numerous organizations including the B.C. Children’s Hospital, the United Way, the Vancouver Public Library and the Vancouver Whistler 2010 Bid Society. During the past year, she chaired the Economic Advisory Council for the federal government.
Phillips, a founder of the investment firm Phillips, Hager & North, contributed his fiscal management and professional planning expertise to Vancouver first as a city council member and then as mayor, from 1973–77. He initiated significant environmental and quality-of-life reforms in the city during his tenure.
Phillips was elected as a member of parliament representing Vancouver Centre in 1979 but was defeated the following year in his bid for re-election, after which he returned to his investment firm.
Past recipients of President's Distinguished Community Leadership Award include Gordon and Leslie Diamond, Jack Diamond (Gordon’s father) Jack and Doris Shadbolt, Michael Smith, Peter Bentley, Carol Henriquez, and the YWCA Vancouver.
