A retrospective of paintings by one of Vancouver's unique and revered artists will be on display in the Simon Fraser University Gallery as well as SFU Vancouver's Teck Gallery January 10 - February 18.

Reading Art - Words and Pictures 1993- 2005 will feature 18 of artist Dave Ostrem's most recent paintings at the SFU Gallery in Burnaby, while six larger paintings will be on display at the Teck Gallery.

Ostrem is known for his bold use of colour and his dedication to exploring the theme of the artist in the studio, which make his work stand out among Vancouver painters. His enquiry, through his painting, into the status of the artist in the modern world is also a questioning of the fate of the individual in an increasingly complex societal framework, says Bill Jeffries, the SFU Gallery's new curator. The show will be his first.

A talk by Ostrem and Jefferies will take place at the SFU Gallery on Saturday, January 14 at 4 p.m. followed by a reception. Images are also available.
