SFU Announces $100,000 in Scholarships for New MBA Program

To attract the best possible students to its new Global Asset and Wealth Management (GAWM) MBA program, SFU Business and the GAWM Business Council will provide up to ten scholarships of $10,000 each to exceptional students entering the new program in the fall.
"This extraordinary $100,000 investment in student scholarships for a brand new program demonstrates the faculty and the Council’s strong commitment to the Global Asset and Wealth Management MBA," says Ernie Love, SFU Business dean.
The new MBA is a departure from traditional finance-oriented MBAs. While it does teach the customary skills required for the efficient engineering of an investment portfolio, such as asset allocation and security selection, it adds a unique emphasis on the ‘architectural’ aspects of wealth management, such as estate planning, ethics and client relationship management. "Our goal," says program director Peter Klein, "is to create financial advisors who both understand the clients's investment needs and have the skills to invest wisely."
To ensure the program’s success, SFU Busines has established an 11-member Global Asset and Wealth Management business council whose members rank among the top Canadian investment industry firms and organizations. Members have each committed $75,000 for a three-year term on the council.
Gary Brent, chairman and CEO of RBC Private Counsel Inc., and an inaugural member of the business council says, "This program is long overdue in the Canadian marketplace. We applaud the far-sightedness of SFU Business in identifying and addressing this gap in the academic regime in Canada."
The MBA program (www.sfu.ca/gawm/) is currently accepting student applications and will commence classes in September 2002, pending university approval. Candidates should have an undergraduate business or economics degree or a professional designation, such as Chartered Financial Analyst, coupled with two to three years’ work experience in the financial services industry.
