Stevenson reappointed president of SFU

Brandt C. Louie, chair of the Simon Fraser University board of governors is pleased to announce the reappointment of Dr. Michael Stevenson to a second term as president of the university. Dr. Stevenson came to SFU in 2000 from York University where he was vice president (academic affairs) and provost. He is a political scientist who has published widely, including a co-authored book that was awarded the Harold Innis prize as the best book in the social sciences in Canada.
During his first term at SFU, President Stevenson successfully pursued an aggressive agenda expanding the academic and physical capacities of the university. Major new initiatives have included the establishment of the new SFU Surrey campus with its highly innovative School for Interactive Arts and Technology; a new bilingual program in public administration and social policy; the comprehensive restructuring of undergraduate curricula and international activities; the creation of a new faculty of health sciences, and the development of new interdisciplinary graduate programs.
As well as the new campus in Surrey, capital expansion at the university during Dr. Stevenson's first term has included the development of the Segal Graduate School of Business in downtown Vancouver, and a new applied sciences complex on Burnaby Mountain. Planning is far advanced for additional teaching and research space at the main campus which has also seen the doubling of student housing and a radical transformation resulting from the arrival of the first residents and businesses in the UniverCity development at the SFU campus.
“Dr. Stevenson has had an impressive first term, and there is strong support for him to continue his leadership for a further term,” says Brandt Louie. “Simon Fraser University is extremely fortunate to have such a dynamic and effective president at this time."
Dr. Stevenson holds appointments to the boards of the Business Council of British Columbia, the Discovery Foundation and the Centre for Excellence in the Mathematics of Information Technology and Complex Systems. He also serves in an advisory capacity to the B.C. Minister of Advanced Education and the Canadian Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade. He serves on the campaign cabinet for the United Way of the Lower Mainland of British Columbia. Dr. Stevenson is currently chair of The University Presidents' Council of British Columbia.
