Tanavoli is an internationally acclaimed sculptor, painter, art historian, and author. His work forms part of the permanent collections of the British Museum (London), Museum Moderner Kunst (Vienna), the Museum of Modern Art (New York), and numerous private and public collections.

A key member of the Saqqakhaneh movement founded around the legendary Atelier Kaboud,  Tanavoli draws inspiration from Iran's multiplex visual, craft, and poetic traditions to pioneer modern sculpture in Iran.

The Centre for the Comparative Study of Muslim Societies and Cultures was created to build greater awareness and understanding of the wide range of Muslim societies throughout the world, each with different beliefs and practices.

It will support distinguished visiting scholars, annual scholarly conferences and public lecture series, student scholarships for international study, expanded library holdings and language programs in Arabic, Persian, Turkish and Urdu.
