Simon Fraser University's swim and dive teams will not participate in the upcoming National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) competition as a result of disciplinary action.

A panel comprised of senior administrators from the Office of the Registrar, and Recreation and Athletics, recently determined that a social event organized by senior members of the swim team contravened the written code of conduct specified in the team manuals distributed at the start of each competitive season. To reinforce the seriousness of the infraction, the panel ruled that both teams would lose the privilege of competing in the NAIA competition in Missouri next month.

"SFU takes allegations of hazing-in whatever form-very seriously," says Nello Angerilli, acting associate vice-president, students & international. "As an institution we are committed to providing a safe, non-threatening environment for everyone in our campus communities."

The men's team is the defending National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics champion; the women's team is the defending runner-up.

Angerilli stressed the department will enhance its orientation program in light of the incident and further clarify its code of conduct to ensure that student athletes abide by SFU's standards and expectations.
