Simon Fraser University turns 40 this year. The university will kick off a year-long 40th anniversary celebration with a birthday party on the Burnaby campus on September 9, 2005. Throughout the 40th anniversary year there will be special activities including an alumni reunion weekend, special 40th anniversary awards and open houses at all campuses. The 40th anniversary activities calendar, which is available on the web, and the 40th anniversary logo were launched today by vice president university relations Warren Gill, chair of the SFU 40th anniversary celebration.

“We want to celebrate SFU's academic and research contributions and its history of community contribution,” said Gill. “We want to share this with members of the SFU family and the larger community.” Alumni will be a big focus. The university has 82,000 graduates making important decisions and having a major impact not only in British Columbia and Canada but throughout the world. Gill says, “We hope that a lot of them will come back and celebrate with us this year.”

When it opened on September 9,1965, SFU was called it the “instant university”. It took just 30 months from the idea stage to the opening of classes for 2,500 students at the not-quite-completed three-sided academic quadrangle with automobiles parked in the middle of it. Now, SFU boasts an international reputation for excellence with three campuses in Burnaby, Vancouver and Surrey and over 25,000 people enrolled in credit courses.
