Simon Fraser University is making higher education more accessible to high school graduates: They are now guaranteed admission with an academic admission average of 75-per cent after graduation from high school.

“We want a broad range of students to consider SFU,” notes SFU registrar Kate Ross.

SFU recruitment ads, running in several Lower Mainland community newspapers, say: “Good students deserve a few guarantees.” Ross explains many high school grads with a 75-per cent average or better do not even apply to SFU, thinking their marks are not high enough.

Applicants with a 90-per cent high school graduation average will automatically receive a minimum $3,500 entrance scholarship: Applicants with a 95-per cent average get an automatic $5,000 award.

SFU’s effort to attract new students extends beyond making admission more accessible. The university is focusing greater attention and resources on increasing students’ success rate once they’re here.

“We’re guaranteeing a room in residence to any new student and priority access to Fall courses,” adds Ross. “We’re even piloting early academic advising and financial assistance programs for new students.”
