Shahriar Mobashery, a world leader in the search for a new antibiotic to combat the deadly, drug-resistant staph bacteria, gives the 2007 Simon Fraser University Merck Frosst public lecture Antibiotics: the 20th-century's tarnished silver bullets, Tuesday, March 27, 3:30 pm, C9001, on the Burnaby campus.

The next day (3:30 pm, SSB7172, Burnaby campus) he'll present a research lecture on the chemistry of resistance to antibiotics in methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA).

MRSA (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) was first identified in the early 1960s. Vancomycin resistant enterococci (VRE), in particular, is a rare but extremely deadly staph strain for which treatment options are limited. "Staph infection has long been a concern in hospitals," said Mobashery, Navari Family chair in life sciences at the University of Notre Dame. "In the last 10 years, it has also emerged as a concern in prisons and nursing homes."

Dr. Mobashery's research interests include mechanisms of antibiotic resistance, new classes of antibiotics and cancer metastasis. He has advised numerous governmental panels and industrial organizations.

Note to Editors: Dr. Mobashery is available to media by phone prior to his arrival on Monday. Much of his time during his visit will be spent with SFU researchers. If you would like to arrange an interview please call Susan Jamieson-McLarnon, 604.291.5151. Media are welcome at both lectures. He will also be available to media following the Tuesday lecture.
