Simon Fraser University is pleased to announce that Andrew Corporation is extending its technology leadership in wireless communications infrastructure with the acquisition of some SFU intellectual property focused on radio frequency (RF) power amplifiers.
Andrew has added to its industry leading patent portfolio through the purchase of certain patents relating to RF power amplifiers originally developed by professor Jim Cavers in SFU's school of engineering science. The patents focus on amplifier linearization methods and system architectures used in power amplifiers and transceivers for W-CDMA (wideband code division multiple access) and CDMA (code division multiple access) applications for second- and third-generation wireless systems. “We are pleased that Andrew will be implementing these patents for use in their future communication products,” says Cavers.
Andrew has approximately 1,450 patents (750 active and 700 pending) worldwide. In addition, the company invested $110 million in the fiscal year 2004, or about six percent of revenues, in research and development across all products.
“Through its robust patent portfolio and continued investment in global R&D, Andrew adds considerable value and differentiation to its products and systems at the wireless infrastructure subsystems level,” said J.C. Huang, chief technology and strategy officer of Andrew Corporation. “We are proud to strengthen our significant collection of intellectual property, while expanding the availability of our proprietary technology to other vendors for the benefit of customers worldwide.”
BTG (LSE: BGC), the intellectual property and technology commercialization company based in both London and Philadelphia, were instrumental in adding value by prosecuting the additional patents and negotiating the sale. Teri Lydiard, technology manager with SFU's University/Industry Liaison Office, notes: “Through our discussions Andrew emerged as the most suitable partner to advance this technology.”
