B.C. business leader Brandt Louie has been elected chancellor of Simon Fraser University. He succeeds Milton Wong, who will step down in June after serving two consecutive three-year terms.

Louie is president of H.Y. Louie and chairman and CEO of London Drugs Ltd. He has been a member of SFU's board of governors for the past five years and is currently board chair. He also chairs SFU's 40th anniversary fundraising campaign.

Louie was unanimously nominated by the SFU alumni association to run for chancellor. “I am extraordinarily pleased that Mr. Louie will now bring his vision, leadership and advocacy to the university's service as our new chancellor. As the current chair of our board of governors, Mr. Louie has already made a significant contribution to SFU and, as chancellor, he will assist us in the successful implementation of our ambitious plans for continuing SFU's 40-year tradition of education, innovation and community engagement,” says SFU president Michael Stevenson.

Born in Vancouver, Louie received his bachelor of commerce from UBC and became a chartered accountant three years later. He serves on several boards of companies and non-profit organizations, including the Royal Bank of Canada, Canfor, the Duke University medical centre and the Neuroscience Canada Foundation. Louie personally leads London Drugs' charity committee, which oversees the company's corporate contributions to health and wellness organizations, medical research, education and the arts.

“I am absolutely delighted and honoured to have been elected SFU's ninth chancellor,” says Louie. “This is an exciting time for the university and I look forward to this new role.”

The chancellor serves as chair of convocation, a member of senate and the board of governors and confers all degrees. The chancellor often represents the university within the larger community and is one of the university's chief ambassadors.

Louie will be installed as chancellor at the university's fall convocation in October.
