SFU professor Mark Jaccard is the recipient of the Donner Prize for his latest book, Sustainable Fossil Fuels: The Unusual Suspect in the Quest for Clean and Enduring Energy (Cambridge Press, 2005). The $35,000 prize recognizes Canada’s best public policy thinking, writing and research.

The award jury described Jaccard’s work as “first class,” calling the book “well-presented and persuasive, offering practical solutions to policy issues that must be among the most important and most urgent for the Canadian government, and for governments around the world.”

Allan Gotlieb, former Canadian ambassador to the US and chair of the Donner Foundation, presented the award to Jaccard in Toronto on April 27.

A professor in the school of resource and environmental management, and a globally-known analyst and commentator on energy issues, Jaccard was on the Donner short list in 2002, for The Cost of Climate Policy, co-written with SFU colleagues John Nyboer and Bryn Sadownik.

Jaccard argues in his latest book that fossil fuels can continue as a key energy source because the technological capability exists to use them without emitting pollutants. His next book will follow up on his suggestions regarding policy design for long-term greenhouse gas reduction.

Jaccard is a former chair of the BC Utilities Commission. He has chaired two inquiries into electricity market reform in BC and has advised governments around the world on energy issues — including the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.
