The first director of Simon Fraser University’s Institute for Health Research and Education (IHRE) has started making inroads in the administration of B.C.’s health system. The provincial government appointed David MacLean to the nine member Fraser Health Authority in March.

The health authority, one of six provincially, oversees and manages health services in 18 communities from Burnaby to Hope. As a health authority board member, MacLean shares the responsibilities of identifying regional health needs, planning programs and services to meet those needs, and ensuring those programs and services are properly funded and managed.

MacLean, the former head of the department of community health and epidemiology at Nova Scotia’s Dalhousie University, is an internationally recognized population health research expert. He views the province’s restructuring of its health authorities into fewer and larger districts as a good move. "The larger boards allow for more integrated planning and service delivery with some savings realized from more efficient management and service delivery," says MacLean.
