No one likes to think of seniors being abused but it happens everyday, everywhere. June 15 will mark the world's first elder abuse awareness day.
This year's Friesen gerontology conference, May 11-12 at Simon Fraser University Vancouver, is bringing together national and international experts to examine the intended and unintended consequences of health, social service and judicial legislation and policies designed to protect the rights of seniors. "We want the message of this meeting to be that freedom from abuse in later life is an achievable goal in BC," says SFU gerontologist Gloria Gutman, conference coordinator. The meeting will showcase innovative abuse prevention programs and present the first annual older adult abuse and neglect awareness to action award. Conference fee $95 ($45 students and seniors). Program and registration at http://webform.sfu.ca/form/gero.friesen.conf.2006/
