Students in Simon Fraser University’s new residences are living in award-winning digs. The residences and new dining hall garnered the 2006 grand award in the inaugural Awards for Excellence in Concrete Construction, announced April 28.
The eight-storey buildings, completed in the fall of 2004 and spring of 2005, won for their overall excellence in architecture, engineering, design and construction features and for using concrete to its fullest potential. In particular, the judges note the project’s “honesty” and “ability to speak to its surroundings.”
The awards are the industry’s highest recognition of works that exemplify vision and innovation in the use of ready-mixed concrete in a variety of applications throughout BC.
“This is great news,” says Jan Fialkowski, director of residences at SFU. “These are attractive buildings, creatively designed both inside and out. They are a wonderful addition to the campus and to student life here at SFU.”
