Post-secondary students in the Fraser Valley will be able to borrow library books and other materials from any of four post-secondary institutions starting this fall.

The directors of the libraries of Simon Fraser University, Douglas College, Kwantlen University College and University College of the Fraser Valley have agreed that students at their four institutions will be able to borrow materials from all four libraries, beginning September 1, 2004 as a one-year trial project.

"The four public post-secondary institutions south of the Fraser have a long history of collaboration," says SFU University Librarian Lynn Copeland. "We have taken up this challenge to further serve our students in the South Fraser area."

"This collaboration will give students at smaller institutions access to a broader collection of materials," she said. "Students at larger institutions will have access to collections possibly closer to their homes, and to particular specialized collections. A further benefit to all institutions will be that the more costly interlibrary loan activity might be reduced, thus achieving small but real cost savings."

The libraries are also exploring other ways to enhance their services for students and faculty, Copeland said.

The other librarians involved with the project are Carole Compton-Smith, Douglas College; Kim Isaac, University College of the Fraser Valley and Cathy MacDonald, Kwantlen University College.
