Preparations are well under way for the opening of Simon Fraser University’s new Surrey campus this fall, with 26 faculty members hired so far and an Open House scheduled for May 15 to show off the new campus.

Another seven faculty members are expected to join the faculty in the next few weeks, adding to a dynamic group of professors hailing from across Canada and around the world.

They will be teaching some 400 students in two undergraduate programs – Interactive Arts and Information Technology, as well as about 30 graduate students.

Among the faculty members for the new Surrey campus are:

Steve DiPaula, a well-known facial animation expert and former Stanford Unviersity professor and creative director with Saatchi and Saatchi Interactive

Susan Kozel, an acclaimed performance artist, dancer and lecturer, originally from the United Kingdom

Kay Wiese, whose research into 3-d visualization of molecules is attracting great interest from around the world

Artificial intelligence researcher Toby Donaldson, who is applying game theory research to online auctions

Thecla Schiphorst, an interactive arts professor who is developing wearable computing fabrics.

Martin Laba, the acting program director of Simon Fraser University Surrey, says he was delighted with the way preparations are going for the fall term.

"We have been on the fast-track for hiring faculty for SFU Surrey, and I'm extremely grateful for the hard work, commitment, and the good will of everyone involved in this transition process, both at SFU and the former Tech BC. "I'm delighted that we have been able to retain a substantial number of faculty for SFU Surrey, all outstanding scholars and researchers who have expressed their commitment to the university, and who will have a considerable and positive impact on SFU and the wider community."

SFU President Michael Stevenson has welcomed the former TechBC students into the SFU community. "Simon Fraser University intends to give all students from TechBC who have already made progress towards their degrees an opportunity to complete the programs in which they have enrolled. When you join our community of scholars, you will receive an education from an institution that consistently ranks among Canada's premier comprehensive universities -- an education that values openness, inclusiveness, dialogue and risk-taking," he said at a recent event at SFU’s Surrey campus.
Simon Fraser University Surrey will hold an open house on May 15 to showcase its programs to potential students and the wider community. Visitors will be able to gather information, watch demonstrations, see a virtual reality lab, meet students and faculty at the state-of-the-art campus. Simon Fraser University Surrey is located at 2400 Surrey Place, 10153 King George Highway, in Surrey, next to the Surrey Central SkyTrain station. The Open House takes place from 6 to 8 p.m. More information can be found on the SFU website at http://www.reg.sfu.ca/openhouse/
