More than 3,000 students prepare for spring convocation

Graduation is just around the corner for some 3,100 SFU students, the largest class of students eligible to take part in SFU's spring convocation. Ceremonies recognizing their achievements will be held on June 1, 2 and 3.

Two ceremonies will be held each day, beginning at 9:45 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Graduands, wearing blue caps and gowns and led by the SFU pipe band, will participate in processions leading them past the AQ reflecting pond and down the steps into Convocation Mall. The ceremonies will recognize students in the following fields of study:

Wednesday a.m.: Arts and social sciences, including cognitive science, criminology, humanities, linguistics, philosophy, psychology, and special arrangement degrees.

Wednesday p.m.: Arts and social sciences, including anthropology, archaeology, Canadian studies, contemporary arts, French, geography, history, Spanish and Latin American studies, political science, women's studies, as well as master's programs in fine arts, liberal studies, and publishing.

Thursday a.m.: Arts and social sciences, including economics, English, and all bachelor of general studies degrees.

Thursday p.m.: Applied sciences

Friday a.m.: Business

Friday p.m.: Education and science

Honorary degrees will be conferred on the following individuals:

Wednesday a.m.: Michael Audain, chairman and chief executive officer of Polygon Homes Ltd, and a significant patron of the arts;

Wednesday p.m.: Leila Getz, founder and director of the world-renowned Vancouver Recital Society;

Thursday a.m.: Alma Lee, founder and current artistic director of the Vancouver International Writers Festival;

Thursday p.m.: Jack Blaney, SFU president emeritus and, most recently, chair of the Citizen's Assembly on Electoral Reform;

Friday a.m.: Brandt Louie, president and CEO of H.Y. Louie Ltd. Currently SFU board of governors chair and the university's newly elected chancellor (he will be installed in October);

Friday p.m.: Bing Thom, principal of Bing Thom Architects and one of Canada's foremost architects, who designed the Surrey Central City project, home of SFU's Surrey campus.
