Members of Simon Fraser University's new UniverCity community will mark the completion of the first phase of the development with a day of festivities in the town square on Saturday, June 4.

SFU president Michael Stevenson and SFU Community Trust president Michael Geller will kick off the celebration when they, along with representatives of three levels of government gather at 11 a.m. in the town square to raise flags and unveil a plaque, and rows of dedication pavers, to recognize the contribution of those who helped create one of Canada's new sustainable communities.

From formal to fun
In addition to the formal activities, opening day events include a breakfast in the town square for the new residents, a sustainability fair demonstrating the benefits of a sustainable lifestyle, and ongoing performances and activities in the square. There will also be an opportunity to try out, and win, a new electric scooter which has recently been introduced to Canada.

The first residents include a broad mix of households, including university faculty and staff, students, as well as many people who have no previous connection whatsoever with the university. They are discovering what promises to be a well-planned healthy, safe and livable community, in a magnificent mountain top setting.

Future development
The first phase of UniverCity includes 585 apartments and townhouses, along with new stores, restaurants, offices, town square, and the first portion of an extensive pedestrian and bicycle pathway network. Future phases will include an elementary school, community centre, and neighbourhood parks, additional shops and offices, as well as a broad array of housing. It is expected that when the community is completed, two decades from now, it will house up to 10,000 people.

Saturday, June 4th will be an opportunity for residents of the new development to celebrate their community and for those who haven't visited the top of Burnaby Mountain in awhile to check out the remarkable changes underway. The event will take place from 10 am to 5 pm. To get to UniverCity, follow the signs to Simon Fraser University, where additional signage will direct visitors to the festivities.
